如何跨躍技術與應用的鴻溝?

我在這個專欄中已多次談到,擁有技術不是關鍵,能為客戶做出好應用才是贏家。但是,從技術到應用卻存在一道鴻溝,是考驗企業最重要的生死線,躍過的就有機會活下來,跨不過的就被淘汰。要如何跨躍,考驗企業家的能耐與智慧。

先舉一個最近採訪的案例。成立於2012年的「雲創通訊」(M2COMM),主要產品是新零售業使用的電子貨架標籤。從三年前至今,雲創已累積出貨超過百萬個,由於產品順利進軍歐洲,預計今年出貨量上看數百萬個。在國內瞄準物聯網應用的新創公司中,雲創是少數能夠熬過考驗且活下來的企業。

雲創的董事長兼創辦人為魏駿愷,創業團隊背景大多來自IC設計業,因此開始時大家想的是「要做出一顆超厲害物聯網IC解決所有問題。」但是當實際運作時就完全不是如此,客戶不關心雲創有無能力做一顆超棒的IC,而是要幫忙解決賣場中採用電子貨架標籤這種新技術後,所有可能帶來的各種麻煩事,客戶更不會因為雲創是一群年輕人組成的新公司,就降低對產品的要求。客戶認為,「既然你要做我的生意,這些問題不就是你該幫忙解決的嗎?」

於是,雲創只能把做IC的想法放一邊,努力解決客戶的各種疑難雜症。基地台不穩,他們就做基地台;網管軟體不夠好,他們就做軟體;整個系統都不對,最後他們就什麼都做了,不會的趕快去學習。第一代產品做完不夠好,又修改了第二版、第三版,就這樣搞了三、四年,才真的收服客戶的心,下了第一筆單。

但事情還沒完,百密仍有一疏,由於團隊過去沒有管理外包廠的經驗,好不容易歐洲客戶開始快速導入,結果外包組裝廠商私自更換材料,導致產品品質出現嚴重問題,只好幫客戶把產品一個個下架,從全部更換完到客戶再下單,又耗掉一年多。但也因為負責任的態度又贏回客戶的心,如今產品終於順利交貨,業績也開始起飛。

從最初想做IC,到如今變成系統解決方案的公司,雲創大部分力氣都花在系統與軟體的工作上,至於過去自認很強的IC產品則退居幕後,授權「晶豪科技」(ESMT),由其進軍物聯網IC市場,以求雙贏。

物聯網是一個尚在發展中的產業,每一個應用規模都還有限,例如一家零售店面大約用到四千到八千個電子貨架標籤,若全國有一百家分店,用量也不過百萬個,這與過去電子業的規模不能相比,但是從底層技術到上層應用,每個環節都缺一不可,對供應商來說就好像是比十項全能,團隊若沒有不斷試錯與學習的精神,根本不可能成功。

此外,從技術到應用是一道鴻溝,不同產業的應用也有巨大障礙要跨躍。例如電子貨架標籤下一個更大的應用市場是智慧製造,因為製造業會用到更多電子標籤,但零售與製造終究是不同產業,雲創的競爭同業大部分是歐美公司,鎖定的是零售這個垂直產業,未必有能力跨躍到製造業,而雲創從下而上累積技術實力,雖然是所有廠商中最小的一家,但因為已經被客戶磨出一身死纏爛打的好功夫,未來要進軍製造業,勝算就高出很多。

談到這裡,我認為跨躍技術與應用鴻溝的關鍵,其實是企業家的心態。面對客戶提出要求時,成功與失敗的企業反應是不同的,成功的企業家勇於接受挑戰,即使事情很難,仍然會努力學習,完成使命。但失敗的企業家則會認為,這又不是我該做的,從根本上就排斥,當然不可能有好結果。

台灣有130萬家中小企業,每家公司都像雲創通訊一樣,要面對技術與應用鴻溝的跨躍與挑戰,能夠成功做到,才有機會鯉躍龍門、邁向成功之路。若把觀察層次從單一企業拉高到整體產業,台灣在技術與應用的鴻溝不僅存在,在許多新技術的發展上也已落後,形成技術與應用兩頭都出現落差的現象。

事實上,台灣從個人電腦時代崛起,過去十多年全球網路、雲端及大數據當紅,但台灣主流產業沒有太多變化,仍停留在電腦與半導體,放眼未來人工智慧(AI)、5G或量子電腦等新技術領域,台灣也頂多只能當跟隨者,難以和國際大廠競爭。雖然情勢嚴峻而且很現實,但如果大家能夠因此承認不足,更聚焦投入到應用的創新上,恐怕才是台灣發展的機會。

以發展AI為例,近幾年台灣雖然到處都言必稱AI,但是產業基礎不深、人才不足,都讓AI發展停留在喊口號的層次,當然更不可能將AI技術實際運用到解決企業的問題上。我觀察到,去年由中研院院士孔祥重擔任校長、中研院研究員陳昇瑋擔任執行長的台灣人工智慧學校,大量培訓企業AI人才,並實際解決企業遇到的難題,這應該就是一個解決從技術到應用障礙的好案例,很值得大家學習參考。

LG電子標籤在韓國100家超市上架,結合IoT調整價格不再手忙腳亂

LG GNS為同集團的100家GS Supermarket佈署電子標籤,結合IoT物聯網技術,後端系統整合,店員只要以平板電腦就能同步更換商品的標價,擺脫傳統手寫標籤容易出錯、管理上的困難。

在市場上出現一段時間的電子貨架標籤(ESL)系統,儘管不乏試驗性的部署,但在亞洲的大規模應用還在發展中,南韓LG集團旗下的資訊服務公司LG CNS最近便宣布,將替集團旗下的超市品牌GS Supermarket,在100間分店部署了電子貨架標籤系統。 

LG CNS本週表示,已經與GS Supermarket簽署供應商合約,將替GS Supermarket的100家分店建置以電子紙、物聯網(IoT)技術為基礎的ESL解決方案,簡化零售通路的標價管理。 

傳統的零售通路貨架上的售價標籤,都是透過人工方式置換,並需要配合促銷活動、商品重新配置、專案架等安排,重新置換,容易出錯或來不及及時更換,且紙質標籤也可能脫落,造成管理的困難與用戶體驗的打折。 

LG CNS推出的電子貨架標籤系統,則可透過後端系統整合,店員可以透過平板電腦,直接在現場同步更換貨架上的標籤內容,對於因為季節性、到貨狀況變化較大而可能需要經常更改現場擺設方式的生鮮產品,可以更有效率進行貨架配置與價格標示的調整。 

在進入零售業大規模部署前,韓國主要的ESL應用以藥廠的原料管理、大型企業的員工座位名牌為主要應用領域。韓國國內ESL含後端軟硬體與相關服務市場規模在中大型零售業估計可達6.13億美元之譜,若計入中小型零售商,則有潛力達到8.76億美元之多。 台灣電子紙業者元太,以及電子標籤面板驅動IC業者晶宏在相關硬體亦耕耘多時,另有雲創通訊、群峰資訊等廠商推出軟硬體整合解決方案。

電子貨架標籤再升級 雲創新一代ELSA問世

電子貨架標籤系統再進化。雲創通訊宣布推出新一代電子貨架標籤系統(ELSA),其硬體規格的提升及新增的軟體功能使得這套電子貨架系統能夠更簡便的安裝和維護;同時推出的曲面電子標籤不但體積小,再加上流線的設計,將可更廣泛應用到零售流通業,促進智慧零售概念落實。

雲創通訊執行長魏駿愷表示,電子標籤市場其實存在已久。一開始電子標籤角色很單純,純粹為了節省人力和紙張。然而,隨著技術進步,電子標籤的任務已不再是單純的省紙張和成本,而是逐漸加入一些新的功能,例如行銷,或是準確掌握物流、客源等狀況。換言之,透過電子貨架標籤,可使資訊更透明、服務更即時、提升管理效率,進而大幅增加實體店面獲利,與顧客的互動也會更為良好。

據悉,新推出的ELSA系列產品中,高度整合的ELSA接收器(iAP)為目前最小的電子標籤基地台,體積只有100×68×25mm,毋須透過店內的電腦或其他伺服器,透過零售店的內網及搭配ELSA路由器(iRT),即可有效管理近3萬平方公尺,相當於六個足球場的所有資料傳輸。

另外,此一iAP側邊有設置SD卡的插槽方便零售業主備份資料,背面還貼有軟性磁鐵方便業者快速並輕鬆安裝;iAP及iRT都可以在全Wi-Fi環境運作,並且有備用電池維持資料傳輸穩定不受斷電影響。該產品還具備雲端應用讓業者更輕鬆管理及監控安裝在各處的電子標籤,讓零售經營更加即時又有效率。

魏駿愷進一步指出,電子標籤未來勢必會朝著輕薄短小的設計發展,因為這可幫助終端客戶縮短導入時間和建置成本,使電子標籤可更快普及化;而為因應此一趨勢,未來電子標籤不論是硬體、軟體、系統效能,以及通訊協定都需要調整,而上述調整又牽涉到嵌入式系統與使用者介面,甚至是最後的使用者體驗,因此,該公司除了運用自身的專有技術(Know how),也會與其他領域業者合作,使電子貨架標籤設計愈加精簡化。

另外,魏駿愷認為,軟體勢必會成為電子貨架標籤的發展關鍵。硬體面主要提供可靠的連結、長電池壽命等,但若是要帶給消費者更好的使用體驗,或發展更廣的應用服務,重點仍舊是回歸軟體設計。因此,隨著現在處理器運算功能愈來愈強,雲創科技也會致力強化軟體部分,計畫讓電子貨架標籤增添新的功能,例如與消費者的手機互聯,進而提升使用者體驗,促進電子貨架標籤普及化速度。

電子標籤 帶動商店革命

你是否有經歷過,在大賣場或是連鎖藥妝店血拚時,面對長長的購物結帳人潮,耗費比挑選商品更久的時間?或者是選購商品時,為了商品比價、保存期限傷透腦筋?現在新型態的電子標籤,藉由雲端與物聯網技術,將改善這些痛苦。

日本官方更喊出,將擴大使用電子標籤用於Lawson超商,目標在2018年催生無人便利商店,主打無收銀員的設計,藉由電子標籤內建傳輸、存取與感測器,協助消費者自動結帳。

事實上,美國一線大型零售商也已經在庫存管理上採用電子標籤,大大降低人力成本與提升作業效率。甚至亞馬遜目標逐步規廣測試的「Amazon Go」未來商店,在今年開始在西雅圖市營運。

據亞馬遜對外曝光的宣傳影片中,運用電子標籤以及物聯網相關人工智慧技術,打破傳統超商與大賣場購物的體驗,進入Amazon Go之後,賣場內的相機、麥克風,將追蹤消費者的行蹤,目標打造讓客戶拿了商品就走,自動完成結帳的未來購物體驗。

一旦消費者拿下貨架上的商品,相機系統會啟動、記錄銷售的商品,並藉由無線射頻識別(RFID)標籤即時辨識貨品種類、掌握貨品動向等,目前升級版的電子標籤更做到更靈敏、使用年限超過五年以及更便宜的售價。

零售店與賣場管理者將能藉由新版電子標籤開始建構智慧商店,還可以彈性依據店內需求擴充標籤數量。業者研判,未來一般的零售商店也將能夠更擁有便利及效率。

電子標籤在零售業革命的過程中扮演關鍵的角色。此外,電子標籤追蹤功能提升,也將能顯著降低更新貨價的人為失誤,讓店家得依據庫存數量和競價狀態,即時動態更新產品價格等。

舉例而言,在一般購物商場以外,包含跨國冷凍食品連鎖店、印度電子商務公司、歐洲藥妝店皆積極評估導入相關電子標籤應用,降低顧客對於產品辨識的困難。

位於印度新德里的MaxWorth電子系統公司主管Sanjay Garg表示,電子標籤以及綠能環保對印度的零售業來說,是相當新穎的想法。

Sanjay Garg他提到,印度有多達22種溝通語言而且各有獨立的文字;因此電子標籤能夠在產品上方同時顯示當地語言及英文說明產品內容及售價。

至於歐洲藥妝產品的競爭激烈,業者認為,需要隨時機動調整貨價吸引客戶上門,因此,電子標籤系統與POS系統整合之後,一鍵就能立刻更新調整後的價格。

法屬蓋亞那Ibis藥妝店負責人Fabien Sublet也指出,因為系統精準反映存貨狀態,也可以掌握何時該下單加訂產品或是從倉庫提貨,填補店面貨架等。

業者認為,電子標籤這類產品提供超低功耗、大型網路的整合方案,也是研發設計最佳的低耗電且安全可靠的物聯網終端應用,將使整體消費者購物經驗更美好。
